What should you NOT do when you have lost, damaged PAN card?

When you have lost PAN card or damaged your existing PAN card, you should not apply for a new PAN card. Out of ignorance people tend to apply for new PAN card instead of applying for duplicate PAN card. Obtaining or possessing more than one Permanent Account Number (PAN) is against the law. Hence when you have lost your PAN card, it is recommended to lodge a complaint with nearest police station to ensure that your PAN card should not get misused, and subsequently apply for a reprint of your lost PAN card with the below mentioned options.

Apply Duplicate PAN Card

Duplicate PAN card represents reprinting of damaged or lost PAN card. As the name implies while applying for a duplicate PAN card the existing Permanent Account Number (PAN) of the applicant and the associated details pertaining to the particular PAN number i.e applicant name, father name, date of birth etc remains unchanged both in ITD records and in the printed duplicate PAN card. It is highly recommended to furnish your PAN card photocopy while applying for duplicate PAN card.

Apply for Correction in PAN Card

Applying for change or correction in PAN card means reprint of your PAN card after making corrections to your existing PAN card details. When you have lost your PAN card and if you required reprint of PAN card after making any corrections or any changes to your existing PAN card details it is recommended to apply using the application form for change in PAN card. When you apply for change in PAN card the Permanent Account Number (PAN) of the applicant remains unchanged, and only the associated details pertaining to the particular PAN number i.e applicant name, father name, date of birth, applicant address, applicant signature etc can be changed. The applicant has the option to make corrections or change to one or more of his/her details. While applying for change in PAN card the applicant should provide supporting documents supporting the changes.

Lost PAN Card

If you’ve lost your PAN card, then you should make replace it immediately. Your Personal Account Number (PAN) is your identity proof  and is used for many things for example opening a bank account, applying for a credit card, opening a demat account (for purchase and sales of shares, investments etc), for buying foreign exchange if you are travelling abroad, cash deposits of over INR 50,000/- need a PAN card and even for sale and purchase of car.  Just knowing the number isn’t enough either a physical copy is usually required by retailers and financial institutions to make sure the photo matches the details you’ve given. As losing your PAN card is so inconvenient, many people choose to request duplicate copies just in case they lose one – one card to keep safe at home, and another to keep in your wallet.

Report the Loss

Your PAN card is an important piece of identification and if it gets into the wrong hands, then fraud or identity theft is possible. If you’ve lost your PAN card, or if you think it could have been stolen, then this needs to be reported to the Police. Once you’ve lodged your original PAN card as lost, then you can start the process of applying for another one. You can apply for a copy of the same card number.

You can apply for a new PAN card by clicking HERE. The first piece of information you’ll need to enter is your PAN card number. As you don’t have a copy of your PAN card to see what the PAN number is, look at other documents where it might be listed such as bank statements, salary slips or letters from your bank or credit card providers. Once you’ve found the number, log in to the portal and carefully follow the instructions for requesting a duplicate card. Make the payment and submit your application, and your new card will arrive in the post. It’s probably a good idea to request more than one PAN card at the same time so that you always have a spare. Making Changes

The process for applying for a duplicate card is the same process as applying for changes to be made on an existing card. If you’re applying for a new card because yours has been lost, then take the opportunity to make and changes to your name or address details at the same time (if there are changes to be made) – it will save you from having to pay a second fee at a later date to make those changes.
